Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport, in partnership with aviation technology provider SITA, launched Fast Pass in early July 2026. The system enables eligible Qatar Airways passengers departing from Doha’s Hamad International Airport to move through multiple airport checkpoints using facial recognition instead of physical travel documents.
Passenger Enrollment and Data Handling
Passengers can enroll once via the Qatar Airways mobile app during check-in or at airport kiosks located near Row 3 inside Hamad International Airport. Enrollment involves linking facial biometrics to the passenger’s passport, boarding pass, and journey details. Biometric data from kiosk enrollment is stored temporarily and deleted automatically 24 hours after departure,
while biometric profiles stored on passengers’ mobile devices remain secure and under their control with options to delete or manage the data.
Scale and Integration of Biometric Touchpoints
The Fast Pass system connects over 700 biometric touchpoints throughout Hamad International Airport. This integration enables consistent facial recognition from check-in and bag drop through security screening, airport lounges, and boarding gates. Unlike previous systems limited to specific checkpoints, Fast Pass creates one of the world’s largest biometric passenger processing ecosystems and the largest in the Middle East.
Traveler Impact and Operational Benefits
By using facial recognition across multiple operational areas, passengers reduce the need to present passports and boarding passes repeatedly, shortening
wait times and streamlining movement through the airport. The system helps to ease congestion during peak travel periods and enhances passenger convenience while maintaining aviation security standards. Participation is voluntary; passengers who prefer traditional processing can continue to present physical documents. All enrolled passengers must carry passports as a backup in case biometric verification fails or further checks are required.
Industry Context and Drivers for Deployment
The launch of Fast Pass reflects growing global demand for digital and contactless travel experiences driven by rising passenger volumes and airport capacity constraints. According to the International Air Transport Association, 50% of travelers have used biometric technology in airports,
and 74% are willing to share biometric data to expedite processing. Airports worldwide, including Dubai International and Japan’s Haneda and Narita airports, have adopted biometric systems to enhance operational efficiency and passenger flow. Fast Pass aligns with aviation’s broader move toward trusted digital identity frameworks, consolidating multiple identity verification points into a seamless passenger journey.
Participation and Data Privacy Provisions
Participation in Fast Pass is optional, preserving the availability of conventional document checks. Data privacy is prioritized, with passenger biometric data retention limits in place and biometric profiles stored securely either temporarily or on user devices. Hamad International Airport describes the system as part of
its Innovation Roadmap, essential for coping with expected growth in passenger traffic and enhancing the airport’s operational capabilities.
