The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is reportedly evaluating a plan to stop customs processing at airports located in sanctuary cities. Key airports under consideration include San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), both major hubs in California.
These developments were addressed publicly by DHS Director Markwayne Mullin in late May 2026, when he discussed this possibility during remarks on national news platforms. The contemplation of suspending customs operations at these airports raises concerns about possible travel disruptions and processing delays in affected locations.
