Context for Route Launches: Seasonality, Agreements, and Airport Development
The wave of new services coincides with the start of the northern winter 2026-27 season, a traditional period for introducing new routes. Finnair’s Helsinki-Bangkok-Melbourne route leverages fifth-freedom traffic rights allowing passenger travel within Thailand and Australia. Western Sydney International Airport is designed to serve Sydney’s western suburbs, operating without the nighttime curfew
imposed at Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport, aiming to relieve capacity constraints. The Canada-UAE air services agreement expanded in December 2025 to allow up to 35 weekly frequencies, enabling Etihad’s new Calgary service. British Airways restart of London Gatwick-Colombo flights comes after more than a decade’s absence, following sustained passenger demand from UK-Sri Lanka travel. Etihad’s Luxembourg route is notable as the first Middle Eastern service to that market.
Passenger Benefits from Expanded Network and New Airport Access
The introduction of these 50 routes will increase travel choices and improve connectivity across continents. Finnair’s new service offers access to approximately 90 European destinations via Helsinki. Passengers in western Sydney
gain a new airport option without nighttime operation restrictions. Air New Zealand’s presence at WSI provides Sydney travelers with a second international gateway beyond Kingsford Smith Airport. Etihad’s services open access to emerging tourism destinations on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast and create new nonstop Middle East-Western Canada connectivity, reducing travel times. Air Canada’s Tenerife South nonstop flights represent the only direct routes bridging North America and the Canary Islands. The initiation of Delta’s Atlanta-Riyadh service will expand U.S.-Saudi Arabia travel links, contributing new markets for business and leisure travelers.
