WestJet mainline flight attendants voted last week to authorize a strike that could begin on August 2, 2026, following the expiration of their collective agreement at the end of 2025. The union representing 4,400 flight attendants, CUPE 8125, remains engaged in negotiations with the airline ahead of the Canada Civic holiday long weekend.
In response to the strike threat, WestJet is allowing passengers scheduled to travel between July 30 and August 4, 2026, to reschedule or cancel flights without any fees. This policy applies to all affected bookings made directly with WestJet and aims to protect travelers amid the possible
labour disruption.
Impact on Flights
Should the strike commence, it will disrupt flights operated by WestJet’s mainline carrier, which runs about 560 flights daily across Canada. However, WestJet Encore flights operating Q400 aircraft and flights operated by WestJet’s codeshare partners will not be impacted, providing continued service on those routes.
Negotiations and Union Response
WestJet remains in active talks with CUPE 8125 and stated it is focused on balancing meaningful improvements for cabin crew with the airline’s future sustainability. An airline representative said, “Our team remains actively engaged in negotiations and is fully prepared to make meaningful improvements that work for cabin crew while balancing the future
sustainability of WestJet,” adding optimism about reaching an agreement that recognizes the contributions of cabin crew.
CUPE local 8125 president Alia Hussain urged the airline to prioritize preventing travel disruptions, stating, “WestJet should do the right thing and prevent travel disruptions for their passengers.”

Passengers who booked their trips through WestJet’s affiliated vacation providers, including WestJet Vacations, Sunwing Vacations, and Vacances WestJet Québec, will be contacted directly with information about flexible travel options.
