WestJet cancelled 76 flights on July 31, 2026, ahead of a potential work stoppage by its cabin crew. The Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 8125 issued a strike notice on July 30, and the airline responded by declaring a lockout. The earliest that a strike or lockout could begin is midnight Mountain Time on August 2, 2026.

Strike authorization vote and dispute causes

CUPE Local 8125 represents approximately 4,400 WestJet flight attendants. On July 30, the union announced that 99.4% of its members voted in favour of strike authorization. Negotiations stalled over the issue of unpaid ground work, with flight attendants stating they work about

35 unpaid hours monthly, including time spent while aircraft are on the ground. WestJet rejects this claim, citing the use of a credit hour pay system standard across North America for cabin crew.

Statements from WestJet and Union

WestJet Group CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech said the lockout notice decision was not made lightly and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to continued bargaining aimed at minimizing the risk of stranded guests, crew, and aircraft. In contrast, CUPE Local 8125 emphasized its goal to reach a fair agreement without disrupting passengers or the travelling public.
