On 26 July 2026, London Gatwick Airport experienced a water supply disruption affecting both passenger terminals. The issue impacted water availability across the airport, including critical services.
Cause: Power Outage at Horley Water Treatment Facility
Regional supplier SES Water reported the disruption was caused by a power outage at a nearby water treatment facility in the Horley area. The outage reduced water pressure and temporarily interrupted the supply to Gatwick Airport terminals and parts of the Horley area.
Passenger Facilities Affected Amid Water Supply Loss
Airport restaurants closed as they could not provide hot drinks or maintain hygiene standards due to the loss of running water. Passengers were unable to flush toilets, wash hands, or
refill water bottles. Bottled water was distributed to passengers and staff as an emergency measure.
Flight Operations Continue Unaffected
Despite the disruption to water supply and passenger services, Gatwick Airport confirmed there were no flight cancellations or delays on 26 July 2026. Contingency measures were implemented to ensure passenger welfare throughout the disruption.
Official Statements from Gatwick Airport and SES Water
Gatwick Airport stated on X: “A water issue in the Horley area is causing disruption at the airport this morning. The problem is affecting water supply in both terminals and is currently under investigation.” They added: “Bottled water is being handed out to passengers and staff, and other contingency measures are
being put in place to ensure the welfare of our passengers.”
SES Water said the power outage at the water treatment facility caused “a number of complications,” including low water pressure and temporary loss of supply for some customers. The company is working closely with Gatwick Airport to restore normal service as quickly as possible.
London Gatwick Airport, Britain’s second busiest airport and a major hub for budget airlines such as EasyJet, experienced this event during ongoing operations on 26 July 2026.
