Virgin Australia canceled multiple flights on 23 September 2026 due to cabin crew calling in sick and refusing to work on rostered days off. The airline acknowledged September as its busiest month outside of Christmas, intensified by spring school holidays and AFL and NRL finals, placing strain on crews.

Crew Exhaustion and Increased Cleaning Duties Drive Sickouts

Cabin crew exhaustion stems from longer duty days and increased responsibilities, including cleaning aircraft between flights. The Flight Attendant Association of Australia (FAAA) and Transport Workers Union of Australia (TWU) have criticized the added workload. FAAA Industrial Relations Manager Steven Reed described cabin cleaning as intensified to the point where crews

“practically have to wear hazmat suits.” Unions demand pay increases and improved work-life balance with shorter shifts and more rest.

Virgin Australia’s Ownership and Investment Background

Virgin Australia, Australia’s second-largest airline, is owned by Bain Capital, which rescued it from bankruptcy in 2020. Bain Capital’s restructuring led to the airline’s relisting on the Australian Stock Exchange. In 2024, Qatar Airways acquired a 25% minority stake. Qatar Airways operates long-haul routes sold under Virgin Australia flight numbers but uses its own crews due to Australian regulatory limits.

Official Statements and Union Responses on Current Disruptions

A Virgin Australia spokesperson confirmed September’s heavy operational demands and noted measures such as deploying additional aircraft and crew. The

spokesperson said, “September is traditionally our busiest period of the year outside of Christmas,” and thanked frontline staff for their commitment. Negotiations with FAAA and TWU continue in good faith toward a positive enterprise agreement outcome. Steven Reed urged Virgin Australia to invest in professional cleaners, stating, “Virgin Australia really needs to spend some money on professional cleaners. It’s fallen to cabin crew for long enough.” A cabin crew member represented by FAAA described staff as “exhausted and fed” due to the current workload.

Passenger Impacts and Union Negotiations Continue

Virgin Australia passengers faced flight cancellations today as some cabin crew reported sick while others declined

days off amid fatigue and increased duties. Last weekend, the airline canceled up to 30 flights for similar crew shortages. The ongoing union talks address pay and working conditions including shift length and recovery times between flights.
