The Viking Libra, the world’s first cruise ship partially powered by liquid hydrogen fuel cells, was floated out on March 19, 2026, at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard in Italy. The vessel measures 239 meters in length, has 499 staterooms, and a guest capacity of 998. It features a bank of proton exchange membrane fuel cells rated up to six megawatts, providing about one-third of the ship’s propulsion power according to Viking chairman Torstein Hagen.

Containerized Hydrogen Fuel Loading Due to Infrastructure Gaps

Since no cruise port globally supports liquid hydrogen bunkering infrastructure, Viking Libra will receive its liquid hydrogen fuel stored in containers that are loaded aboard using cranes

during port calls. Ports such as Bergen, Norway, and Barcelona, Spain, lack shore-side pumping and storage facilities for liquefied hydrogen, necessitating this unique solution that effectively brings the fuel terminal on board.

Propulsion System and Technical Suppliers

The six-megawatt PEM fuel cells installed aboard Viking Libra are built by Isotta Fraschini Motori, a Fincantieri subsidiary located in Bari, Italy. This fuel cell bank delivers over 8,000 horsepower-equivalent but powers only about one-third of the vessel’s propulsion. The remaining two-thirds depend on conventional fuel systems. Viking President and CEO Leah Talactac confirmed the existing fleet uses closed-loop scrubbers allowing operation on heavy fuel oil, indicating the

hydrogen system supplements but does not replace traditional propulsion entirely.

Regulatory Context and Operational Areas

Norway’s zero-emission regulation for passenger vessels over 10,000 gross tons entering UNESCO-protected fjords takes effect from January 1, 2032. Given Viking Libra’s size of 54,300 GT, the ship will be in operation approximately six years before this requirement applies. The fjords covered include Geirangerfjord, Nærøyfjord, Aurlandsfjord, Sunnylvsfjord, and Tafjord. Vessels under 10,000 GT have faced stricter emissions rules since January 1, 2026. Viking Libra is planned to operate in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, regions lacking dockside liquid hydrogen bunkering facilities.

Hydrogen Fuel Production and Emissions Considerations

Hydrogen fuel cells emit only water vapor during operation.

However, the environmental impact depends on hydrogen production methods. Currently, most industrial hydrogen is produced via steam methane reforming, generating CO2 emissions upstream. While green hydrogen produced by renewable-powered electrolysis exists, it is more expensive and less available in volumes sufficient for cruise fleets. Viking has not announced its hydrogen fuel supplier or the origin type—green, blue, or grey. The ship’s zero-emission operation capability applies only during segments when running on hydrogen fuel cells.

Industry Developments in Hydrogen-Powered Shipping

Fincantieri’s Isotta Fraschini Motori successfully fired a single-cylinder test engine running on 100% hydrogen on July 22, 2026, developed in partnership with UK designer Ricardo under

the Wave 2 the Future program. MSC Cruises operates a 150-kilowatt fuel cell demonstrator fueled by LNG aboard its World Europa since 2022. MSC’s Explora V and VI, scheduled for 2027 and 2028 deliveries, will include fuel cells converting LNG into hydrogen. Viking’s Astrea, a hydrogen-powered ship, is planned for 2027.

Official Statements on Viking Libra’s Role in Shipping’s Future

Viking chairman Torstein Hagen described hydrogen as expensive and challenging to procure but regarded Viking Libra as “setting a direction of travel for the future of shipping.” The vessel is partially powered by liquefied hydrogen fuel cells, enabling zero-emission operation capabilities in specific conditions while complying with emissions regulations

expected by 2032 for large passenger ships.
