U.S. Customs and Border Protection temporarily suspended operations at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport on July 29, 2026, resulting in the cancellation of approximately 20 flights bound for the United States. The disruption began on July 29 and continued into July 30, affecting flights departing from Montreal, Quebec.

Cause of Disruption Linked to Construction Odour

The suspension was triggered by a strong odour identified as varnish related to painting work from construction materials in the area. This odour originated from ongoing construction associated with Montréal-Trudeau Airport’s extensive redevelopment project, valued at $10 billion and expected to span the next decade. The project constitutes one of the largest infrastructure transformations

in the airport’s history.

Travel Impact and Passenger Advisory

As a consequence of the customs suspension, around 20 flights to U.S. destinations were cancelled. Passengers planning to travel to the United States through Montréal-Trudeau Airport were advised to monitor the status of their flights directly with airlines before arriving at the airport. Officials warned that delays could persist as operations gradually resumed on the same day the disruption began.

Official Statements and Safety Confirmations

Montréal-Trudeau Airport officials indicated efforts were underway to restore U.S. Customs operations as quickly as possible and apologized for the inconvenience. The Montreal Fire Department inspected the affected area and confirmed no health risks were posed

by the odour. Additional ventilation measures were implemented within the impacted zone to address the vapors.

The airport’s official communication clarified that the varnish odour was unpleasant but not harmful. They thanked passengers for their patience and understanding as U.S. Customs processes returned to normal.

Context of Airport Redevelopment

The $10-billion redevelopment project at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport involves extensive construction work, which is responsible for the odour that led to the suspension of customs operations. This large-scale infrastructure overhaul is expected to continue for years, significantly transforming the airport’s facilities.
