United Airlines experienced a major technology outage on Saturday, July 18, 2026, beginning at 6:00 AM Central Time, affecting its SHARES reservation system. The issue was resolved by 7:15 AM Central Time after a system reboot, but caused significant operational disruptions nationwide.

Flight Delays, Cancellations and Ground Stops at Major US Airports

The outage led to the cancellation of more than 2,000 United Airlines flights across the United States on the same day. Ground stops were applied at key hubs including Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD), Newark Liberty Airport, Washington Dulles Airport, and Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The SHARES system failure disabled self-check-in kiosks and impacted contact center operations, severely

disrupting check-in and boarding processes. Flights already airborne were not affected by the outage.

Passenger Reactions and Airline Response

Passengers reported chaotic scenes and long waits at affected airports, posting complaints on social media. At Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport, a passenger tweeted, “Really @united? No one knows how to fix a computer glitch @ IAH Gate C34?” while another at Chicago O’Hare reported, “United Baggage check-in system down at ORD (Chicago)… I’m cooked.” By 8:23 AM, over 430 outage-related complaints had been registered. United Airlines acknowledged the disruption, stating, “Our operations are returning to normal after an early morning technology issue affected functions including contact

centers and check-in processes.” The airline urged travelers to verify flight status via the United app and thanked both customers and staff for their patience.

Cause and Restoration of Services

The root of the disruption was traced to a technology failure within United’s SHARES reservation system, which hampered ticket processing, baggage check-in, and boarding functions at airports nationwide. The system was fully restored after a reboot completed at 7:15 AM Central Time. The Houston Airport System confirmed that operations at Bush Intercontinental Airport resumed normal levels following the fix, though passengers were advised to allow extra time at airports to accommodate lingering delays.
