Turkmenistan launched its electronic visa (e-Visa) system on October 1, 2026, following an official announcement by the State Migration Service on September 30, 2026. The country’s visa policies had been among the strictest in Central Asia, requiring travelers to secure a letter of invitation before applying for entry.

Legal Amendments Enable E-Visa Implementation

The introduction of the e-Visa system was made possible by amendments to Turkmenistan’s migration law in April 2025, which formally established the legal framework for electronic visa issuance. The State Migration Service took responsibility for implementing the new digital immigration procedures as part of its mandate to simplify visa application and approval

processes.

Briefing in Ashgabat Details Digital Procedures

A briefing held on September 30, 2026, in Ashgabat involved diplomatic missions, international organizations, Turkmen ambassadors, and consuls stationed abroad. The State Migration Service presented the e-Visa system alongside other digital migration services, emphasizing electronic processing for foreign nationals and stateless persons seeking entry to Turkmenistan.

Official Online Portals Launch but Access is Limited

The State Migration Service identified evisa.migration.gov.tm as the official portal for e-Visa applications, according to travel-document specialists VisasNews and Action-Visas. However, the site remains difficult to access externally as of the system’s launch. The agency also maintains a separate official e-Visa verification page to confirm issued visas electronically.

Additionally, Turkmenistan operates an online

registration portal at rgstr.migration.gov.tm for foreign nationals residing in the country. This system, launched prior to the e-Visa rollout and in use since at least August 2026, permits remote completion of registration, extensions, and deregistrations without physical visits to State Migration Service offices.

Traveler Impact: No Invitation Letter Required and Digitalized Registration

Law amendments passed in April 2025 eliminated the requirement for a prior letter of invitation to obtain an electronic visa. This change facilitates a substantially simpler visa process compared to previous entry rules mandating invitation approvals by the State Migration Service and involvement of local agencies.

The e-Visa launch and online registration services collectively aim to reduce

processing times and paperwork. Foreign nationals and hosting organizations can conduct stay-related administrative tasks remotely, marking a major shift in Turkmenistan’s immigration management toward full digitalization.

Outstanding Details on Eligibility and Application

Despite confirming the system launch, Turkmen authorities have not released detailed information concerning visa fees, eligible nationalities, specific visa categories, application requirements, processing durations, or restrictions on entry points. Full access to the application portal remains limited, hindering travelers’ ability to complete or review applications independently.

VisasNews and Action-Visas continue monitoring the situation and will provide updates when the e-Visa application process is fully operational and accessible.
