The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) activated the first touchless biometric e-gates in the United States at Newark Liberty Airport Terminal C during the Labor Day travel period in 2026. Developed in collaboration with United Airlines, the e-gates allow TSA PreCheck passengers to verify their identity and boarding details using face biometrics, eliminating the need for physical identification or boarding passes.
Enhanced Passenger Processing Introduced at Bermuda’s Preclearance Facility
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) implemented Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) at the L.F. Wade International Airport preclearance facility in Bermuda. EPP uses facial comparison technology to match travelers’ faces to passport records within seconds, expediting inspections for U.S. citizens.
The facility’s operator, Skyport, invested in this technology rollout after observing similar systems in Aruba.
Denver International Airport Accepts myColorado Mobile Driver’s Licenses
TSA began accepting myColorado mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) at Denver International Airport security checkpoints, joining 20 other states where mobile IDs are accepted. Using Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2), TSA officers compare travelers’ real-time photos with digital licenses to confirm identities and boarding details without requiring a boarding pass.

Greg Hawko, TSA federal security director at Newark Liberty Airport, said there are currently no plans to deploy the biometric e-gates beyond Terminal C but expressed hope for future expansion across the airport. “The hope is, as
it progresses, we can expand it across the airport,” Hawko stated.
Douglas Cruz, TSA Colorado Federal Security Director, emphasized the role of identity verification in transportation security: “The process of verifying identities is fundamental to ensuring transportation security.” He added, “By enabling travelers to use mobile driver’s licenses, we are leveraging technology to strengthen security and streamline our operations. Our TSA officers are fully trained to accept and process myColorado mDLs, and we are glad to provide this convenient option for those departing DEN and our other state airports.”
