The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began operating the first touchless biometric e-gates in the United States at Terminal C of Newark Liberty Airport. The system enables TSA PreCheck travelers to validate their identities and boarding data through facial recognition technology without needing physical IDs or boarding passes. This pilot program was developed in collaboration with United Airlines and started amid the Labor Day holiday period. Greg Hawko, TSA federal security director at Newark Liberty Airport, stated there is no immediate plan to extend the e-gates beyond Terminal C, but added, “the hope is, as it progresses, we can expand it
across the airport.”
U.S. CBP Rolls Out Facial Recognition at Bermuda Preclearance
At Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) launched its Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) facial recognition system within the preclearance facility. The technology rapidly compares passenger faces with passport photos to expedite inspections of U.S. citizens. The airport operator, Skyport, financed the EPP deployment after observing a similar facial technology installation in Aruba. This investment aimed to streamline passenger processing for outbound travelers.
Denver International Airport Accepts Mobile Driver’s Licenses at TSA Checkpoints
Denver International Airport began accepting myColorado mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) at TSA security checkpoints. TSA officers use Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2) to verify travelers’ identities by matching real-time photos with
their digital licenses and confirming boarding details without requiring boarding passes. Colorado became the 21st state whose mobile IDs are accepted by TSA. TSA Colorado Federal Security Director Douglas Cruz emphasized, “The process of verifying identities is fundamental to ensuring transportation security.” He added, “By enabling travelers to use mobile driver’s licenses, we are leveraging technology to strengthen security and streamline our operations. Our TSA officers are fully trained to accept and process myColorado mDLs, and we are glad to provide this convenient option for those departing DEN and our other state airports.”
