Tamil Nadu displayed its heritage, landscape diversity, and cultural tourism offerings at Tourism Expo Japan 2026 in Tokyo, held from September 24 to 27. The State engaged Japanese travel trade and visitors to promote heritage, cuisine, festivals, Buddhist connections, and emerging tourism products.

Tamil Nadu Tourism Booth Inaugurated by Indian and State Officials

The Tamil Nadu Tourism booth was officially opened by H.E. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, India’s Ambassador to Japan; Dr. S. Swarna, Principal Secretary for Tourism, Culture and Special Initiatives, Tamil Nadu; Mr. Suman Billa, Additional Secretary and Director General, Government of India Ministry of Tourism; and Ms. Suchi Tyagi, Secretary of Tourism, Government of Rajasthan.

Heritage Themes and Ecological Diversity Presented

Tamil Nadu emphasized

its Buddhist heritage linked to port cities like Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam and Poompuhar, as well as Bodhidharma’s association with Kancheepuram and East Asian Buddhist traditions. The State highlighted its seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Sangam literary tradition, and five ecological landscapes: Kurinji (hilly/mountainous), Mullai (forest), Marutham (agricultural), Neithal (coastal), and Palai (arid), each offering distinct biodiversity and cultural experiences.

Launch of Discover Tamil Nadu – International Edition 2026-27

Registrations opened for Discover Tamil Nadu – International Edition 2026-27, a curated trip scheduled from January 12 to 20, 2027, targeting international social media influencers, journalists, travel agents, and operators. Up to 10 participants will be selected to promote Tamil Nadu’s tourism

during the Pongal and festival season.

Strategic Engagement with Japanese Travel Trade and Investment Opportunities

Tamil Nadu engaged Japanese travel trade representatives to boost tourist arrivals and develop customized travel itineraries. The State also presented investment and partnership opportunities in heritage hospitality, eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and experiential travel sectors.

Tamil Nadu promotes diverse tourism segments including adventure, rural, medical, wellness, and ecological tourism. Its nearly 1,076 kilometers of coastline supports water sports and coastal tourism. Destinations under development include Kolli Hills, Jawadhu Hills, and Yercaud. The State also offers natural sites such as the Nilgiris, Agasthiyarmalai, Gulf of Mannar, national parks, mangroves, trekking routes, water sports, and safaris.

Culturally,

Tamil Nadu showcases traditional dance, folk arts, cuisine, and handicrafts including brass and bronze products, sarees, embroidery, jewelry, and pottery, supported by 74 Geographic Indication (GI)-tagged products representing regional crafts.

Official Remarks on Tamil Nadu-Japan Heritage and Tourism Links

Dr. S. Swarna highlighted the Buddhist heritage linking Japan and Tamil Nadu as a foundation for inviting Japanese travelers. The presentation emphasized Tamil Nadu’s heritage and the ecological diversity portrayed in Sangam literature, offering trekking and coastal experiences. She noted the State’s commitment to environmentally and culturally sustainable tourism while strengthening ties with the Japanese travel industry through exhibitions in Tokyo and Osaka.
