All flights at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports were cancelled on October 26, 2026, due to severe weather conditions caused by Storm Boelo. The storm produced hazardous flying conditions, forcing an operational shutdown of air traffic at both airports and grounding more than 100 flights nationwide.

Flooding and Transport Disruptions Across Scotland and Northern England

Storm Boelo also caused significant disruption to rail and road networks in Scotland and northern England. Network Rail Scotland reported flooding at stations in Glasgow and fallen trees blocking railway lines. Speed restrictions and closures affected several rail routes in Scotland. Major roads in the region faced closures caused by fallen cables, collapsed trees,

and damaged surfaces.

Severe Wind Gusts and Weather Warnings

The Met Office issued an amber wind warning covering Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland, and northern England. The yellow wind warning extended farther south until 9pm on October 26. Gusts reached 85 mph in some areas, with reported speeds of 76 mph at St Mary’s Airport in the Isles of Scilly, 74 mph at Aberporth in south Wales, and 71 mph at Culdrose in Cornwall. The Environment Agency issued five flood warnings and 33 flood alerts in northern England, while the Scottish Environment Protection Agency maintained 34 flood warnings and 11 flood alerts.

Cancellation of London’s Annual Diwali and Square Celebrations

The storm’s severe weather

conditions forced the cancellation of London’s annual Diwali and Trafalgar Square celebrations. Independent health and safety advisories concluded that heavy gales and ongoing downpours made it unsafe to build and set up staging for the events, leading to their abandonment.

Passenger Impact and Travel Advice

Passengers booked on flights at Heathrow and Gatwick on October 26 and the following Sunday and Monday faced total cancellations. Gatwick officials urged travelers not to arrive at the airport without confirming their flight status. Airlines adjusted schedules to avoid gridlock in the crowded South East airspace. The Met Office warned the public to stay indoors where possible due to

risks from flying debris and dangerous waves.
