Southwest Airlines experienced widespread flight disruptions across the United States on the morning of October 9, 2026, following a brief internal network outage linked to its vendor Amadeus. The issue impacted key operational systems, including boarding pass printing and mobile app scanning.
Flight Delays and Cancellations Nationwide
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, FlightAware data showed nearly 900 Southwest Airlines flights were delayed and 43 flights canceled nationwide. Dallas Love Field airport, Southwest’s headquarters, recorded 56 delays and seven cancellations during the same period, reflecting a milder impact locally compared to the national figures.
Operational Response During the Outage
During the outage, Southwest Airlines maintained manual processes for checking baggage
and boarding passengers while working to restore full system functionality. These manual operations were necessary to continue flight activities despite the interruption to automated systems managed through Amadeus.
Official Statements and Airport Coordination
Southwest Airlines described the event as a “brief interruption” caused by an internal network issue affecting systems provided by Amadeus. The airline apologized for the inconvenience to customers and emphasized the priority of traveler and employee safety.
Lauren Rounds, spokesperson for the City of Dallas Department of Aviation, confirmed that Southwest Airlines informed the airport’s operations team about the internal network outage. She noted operations at Dallas Love Field were less affected
than the nationwide disruptions.
