Severe thunderstorms on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, caused flight disruptions that affected more than 7,000 flights across the eastern United States. Major Airports Impacted by Weather
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops at several airports due to heavy storms, including Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) in Maryland, Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in Massachusetts, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Teterboro Airport (TEB) in New Jersey, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Westchester County Airport (HPN) in New York,
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) in Pennsylvania, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Virginia. Additionally, Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) in Canada was subjected to a ground stop.
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York did not have an official ground stop but experienced an average ground delay of approximately four hours Tuesday afternoon. In the New York City metropolitan area alone, nearly 600 departing flights were canceled and more than 500 were delayed.
The severe weather prompted flood warnings and tornado watches across the Northeast region. Two tornadoes were confirmed:
one in northeast Pennsylvania and another in northern New Jersey.
Airline Responses and Customer Options
JetBlue, United Airlines, and American Airlines issued travel advisories and flexible rebooking policies due to the disruptions. JetBlue allowed customers with affected flights to rebook travel through Sunday, July 26, or request refunds to their original payment method.
United Airlines waived trip change fees for flights departing between July 20 and July 23, 2026. Eligible customers could reschedule without change fees or fare differences for United flights departing within those dates, maintaining the same cabin class and travel cities as originally booked.
American Airlines required customers to rebook by Wednesday,
July 22, for travel scheduled by Friday, July 24. Notifications were sent directly to affected passengers via email or mobile app.
FAA Ground Stops and Delay Details
The FAA imposed ground stops at multiple airports to temporarily restrict aircraft movement amid the severe thunderstorms. These measures contributed to accumulating delays and cancellations as the weather conditions persisted.
FlightAware reported that although JFK was not under a ground stop, severe weather caused significant operational delays. Meanwhile, the New York City area saw the highest concentration of cancellations and delays with more than 1,100 flights affected between cancellations and delays.
