Porter Airlines cancelled a flight scheduled to depart from Victoria to Toronto, Canada, on August 6, 2026, due to a child passenger refusing to wear a seatbelt.

Child’s Refusal Halts Flight Departure

The child was standing in their seat and did not secure the seatbelt despite efforts by the accompanying parent and cabin crew. Porter Airlines confirmed that these attempts to ensure compliance were unsuccessful. As a result, the aircraft returned to the terminal, and the two passengers involved disembarked before the flight was cancelled.

Safety Risks Cited by Airline and Expert

Porter Airlines stated that “The aircraft could not take off in this unsafe condition, so the crew elected to return

to the terminal and have the two passengers disembark.” Child aviation safety expert Lia Tuso emphasized the danger, explaining that “Unrestrained children can become projectiles” during turbulence, takeoff, or landing.

Passenger Impact and Flight Delay

The flight could not depart before the runway closure after midnight on August 6, resulting in cancellation. Passengers originally booked on this service were rebooked onto flights departing the following day. Passenger Aryeh Kozuch explained the child had appeared scared rather than disruptive, sharing that the child “just kept hiding under their seat” and slipped out from under the seatbelt attempts.

Debate Over Child Passenger Rules

The incident has sparked debate about airline policies on

children’s behaviour and seatbelt compliance. Some commentators advocate strict rule enforcement for safety. Fox News co-host Charles Hurt remarked, “We’ve all been those parents. But this is beyond the pale.” Others noted that fear can cause such behaviour, urging understanding for children experiencing anxiety during flights.
