Phu Quoc island is rapidly increasing its hotel room capacity ahead of hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) regional summit scheduled for November 2027. Sun Group’s Ruby Beach complex at Bai Dat Do will feature 17 towers with more than 7,000 rooms in its first phase, with potential expansion up to nearly 20,000 rooms in future phases. Concurrently, Marriott International has a pipeline of 10 hotels and resorts in Phu Quoc and Vung Tau totaling nearly 4,500 rooms, set to open between 2026 and 2030. Sun Group and Marriott International recently signed a framework deal to study more hotel projects

together in Phu Quoc, Da Nang, and other Vietnamese locations.

Occupancy Rates and Market Demand

Phu Quoc’s hotel occupancy during peak seasons currently exceeds 90%, highlighting strong demand. CBRE analysis indicates that sustaining such occupancy will require room-night demand growth of approximately 10% annually through 2030. The surge in supply linked to preparations for the APEC 2027 summit creates challenges for maintaining these levels post-summit.

Tourism Growth and Developer Strategies

The hotel expansion aligns with Phu Quoc’s preparations to host the APEC summit in November 2027. Developer investment reflects confidence in the island’s rising popularity, with Sun Group’s Ruby Beach project reported by VietnamPlus as a major development. The collaboration

between Sun Group and Marriott International extends beyond Phu Quoc to projects in Da Nang and Vung Tau, aiming to accommodate Asia-Pacific region visitors. This development represents a strategic effort to balance event-driven demand spikes with longer-term tourism growth prospects.
