to deplane. Travelers scrambled to rebook flights with limited availability; one passenger, Karl Skotleski, traveling through Philadelphia International Airport to Orlando, reported rapid flight booking and cancellations he attributed to weather. Passengers Ariella Mafuta and Laura Buschnyj described long delays, canceled departures, and overnight stays near the airport.
Airport Official Attributes Delays to Weather Impact
Heather Redfern, spokesperson for Philadelphia International Airport, said the airport is not given specific reasons for all delays and cancellations but believes many are due to the weather issues on July 18 in Philadelphia and across the country. She noted the FAA’s ground stops and delays at Philadelphia International Airport and other
airports due to thunderstorms as key factors in the disruptions.
American Airlines passengers were particularly affected. Karl Skotleski noted, “My wife got the text and then we moved on getting another flight. That flight booked up within minutes, so luckily we got on, but we know that some other people that we were going with did not get on. And there was only like one or two flights available at that moment.” Ariella Mafuta added, “Basically like sitting there for four hours in the airplane, and due to weather problems, they basically canceled all flight departures. So they made you
exit the plane, try again today?” to which she responded, “Yes.” Laura Buschnyj said, “I’ve been here for long enough, had to obviously find accommodations and spend the night. All I’m trying to do is just go home.”
