More than 600 flights were cancelled across the United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, due to ongoing disruption caused by an air traffic control technical failure at National Air Traffic Services (NATS) on September 8. The NATS flight processing system failure led to significant operational challenges continuing into the next day.

Airports Impacted and Operational Disruptions

The disruption affected multiple airports including London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, London Stansted, Luton, Birmingham, Belfast City, Edinburgh, East Midlands, and Jersey. Heathrow Airport suspended all arrivals for the remainder of September 8, 2026, before resuming departures later that day. On September 9, Flightradar24 recorded 177 cancellations predominantly at

Heathrow, where continued delays remained as airlines and airports worked to recover.

Airlines and Passenger Experience

British Airways, EasyJet, KLM, and Lufthansa experienced cancellations and delays related to the NATS system failure. EasyJet reported some flights were unable to operate due to the technical issues. Passengers reported delays including lengthy waits on the tarmac and a lack of timely communication about changes to schedules.

Official Responses and Passenger Advisories

NATS implemented a fix to the flight processing system, allowing a gradual recovery of operations. Martin Rolfe, CEO of NATS, apologized for the disruption and announced a full investigation into the cause of the failure. A NATS statement said, “This

has been a very complex recovery and has created difficulties for the whole aviation network, from which it will take time to recover.”

Heathrow Airport posted on its official X account advising passengers: “Following yesterday’s NATS technical issue, flights are operating today, but some disruption may continue as airlines reposition aircraft and crew. Please check your flight status with your airline before traveling to the airport and only travel if your flight is confirmed to be operating.”

Compensation and Passenger Rights

Passengers affected by cancellations or delays due to the NATS failure may be entitled to compensation under UK Civil Aviation Authority rules. Compensation

ranges from £220 to £520 per person depending on delay length. Delays over five hours allow passengers to cancel travel and request refunds. Air traffic control disruptions are generally considered extraordinary circumstances, which impacts eligibility for cash compensation, although airlines may provide vouchers and accommodations.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Airlines are repositioning aircraft and crews to address the backlog caused by the disruption. The complexity of the recovery process means that operational difficulties will persist beyond September 9 as the UK aviation network stabilizes.
