Nor’easter Rainfall and Runway Construction
The disruptions were caused by a potent nor’easter that struck southern New England the previous weekend, dropping between 3 and more than 7 inches of rain. Additionally, ongoing runway and taxiway construction reduced runway availability and overall airport efficiency. High wind speeds forced use of alternative runways, including one officially closed for construction, worsening the operational constraints at Logan Airport, according to Massport officials.
Flight Delays and Passenger Advice
Inbound flights faced
an average delay of five hours and 14 minutes. Massport advised all travelers to check their flight status before coming to the airport due to widespread disruptions. The FAA ground delay was implemented to better manage the arrival of flights under these weather and construction limitations.
Massport spokesperson Jennifer Mehigan stated via email that wind conditions necessitated use of runways other than the one closed for construction, resulting in reduced efficiency throughout the day’s operations.
