FAA Ground Delay and Flight Impact
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground delay program just before 11 a.m. to manage congestion at Austin’s airport amid operational challenges. The program initially restricted inbound flights until 7 p.m., applying to all Austin-bound flights originating within the contiguous United States. In response to thunderstorms moving into the Interstate 35 corridor later in the day, the FAA extended the ground delay through 9 p.m.
According to Austin Bergstrom’s arrivals board, approximately 115 flights were
delayed through 7 p.m., with about 95 flights still delayed into midnight. All delays pertained to arrivals, not departures.
Delay Durations and Weather Effects
Flight delays averaged 32 minutes before noon and grew to about one hour by mid-afternoon. While the majority of delays remained under 30 minutes, some exceeded one hour, and a portion of flights faced delays of three hours or more, as reported by the FAA. Early in the day, some flights were delayed by more than two and a half hours.
Afternoon thunderstorms to the north and west of Austin contributed to worsening delays. Earlier in the morning and again in
the afternoon, brief ground stops were implemented due to low cloud cover, momentarily halting all inbound flights.
Airport Construction and Traveler Guidance
The ongoing construction involves building two miles of new taxiways in the middle of the airfield to support a future second concourse. These new taxiways will connect the east and west sides of Austin-Bergstrom and replace existing taxiways that will be removed to accommodate the new concourse.
Jim Reynolds, the airport spokesman, stated, “The majority of these delays are less than 30 minutes but there are a handful of delays over an hour.” He urged travelers to monitor their flight status and airline
information closely, advising: “Travelers should keep an eye on their flight status and info from their airlines as they will have the latest information regarding flight times and changes to their schedules.”
