Ontario implemented stricter social assistance eligibility rules in mid-August 2026. The new regulations reduce benefits for temporary visa holders, including international students and temporary workers. These changes restrict provincial financial assistance to individuals legally authorized to reside in Canada.
Temporary visa holders such as those with student visas, work permits, visitor visas, or tourist status are no longer eligible for aid under Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program. The regulations explicitly exclude people who are in Canada illegally or have only temporary authorization to remain in the country.
