More than 500 flights were cancelled and approximately 4,000 flights delayed across John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International, and Philadelphia International airports on July 13, 2026, due to weather and air traffic control staffing issues.
To manage congestion, the Federal Aviation Administration is enforcing flight slowdowns into these four airports. The FAA is intermittently implementing ground stops, which hold departing flights at their origin, as well as ground delays allowing departures with assigned staggered takeoff times. These measures aim to maintain safe spacing and reduce airborne holding patterns.
Adverse weather conditions combined with staffing shortages at the air
traffic control facilities overseeing these busy airports have caused the disruptions. These constraints limit the rate at which aircraft can safely be handled for arrival and departure.
Passengers flying into or out of JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, and Philadelphia International airports should anticipate ongoing cancellations and delays throughout the evening. Flights subject to ground stops remain on the ground until the restrictions lift, while others face delayed takeoff slots to maintain air traffic flow and spacing.
