Norwegian Cruise Line has cancelled the last planned departure of the Norwegian Sky, originally scheduled to sail from Piraeus (Athens), Greece, on September 9, 2026, on an 18-night repositioning cruise from Athens to Muscat, Oman. The cruise was initially set as a 21-day voyage ending in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, but was shortened and rerouted before cancellation due to regional security issues.
Middle East Instability Drives Cancellation
The Miami-based cruise operator attributed the cancellation to ongoing instability and security concerns in the Middle East, exacerbated by the US-Iran conflict. Norwegian Cruise Line stated the decision prioritized the safety and security of passengers and crew, citing
a lack of confidence to deliver the expected experience amid continuing regional uncertainty.
Revised Itinerary and Ports of Call
The itinerary was modified to avoid the Arabian Gulf and Persian Gulf, reducing the itinerary from 21 to 18 days, and later to 19 nights. The revised route involved calls at Rhodes, Greece; Alexandria, Port Sokhna, Safaga, and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and Aqaba, Jordan. The voyage also included transits of the Suez Canal and passages through the Red Sea, ending in Muscat instead of Dubai.
Passenger Compensation and Refunds
Norwegian Cruise Line is providing full cash refunds to passengers, processed automatically to the original payment methods.
Additionally, the company offered an enhanced future cruise credit equaling 50% of the cancelled voyage fare, supplementing an earlier 15% credit issued during the itinerary change. This amounts to a total 65% future cruise credit on top of the full refund. The credits are valid for sailings departing on or before December 31, 2027.
For example, passengers who paid £2,000 will receive a £2,000 refund plus £1,300 in future cruise credits combining the 15% and 50% amounts. Norwegian Cruise Line will cancel and refund flights booked through them for the voyage. Passengers who arranged independent flights may claim reimbursement of
up to US$300 per person for eligible airline fees not covered by insurers or airlines.
Norwegian Sky’s Transition to Cordelia Cruises
The Norwegian Sky, constructed at Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany in 1999, will leave the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet in October 2026 following its sale to Cordelia Cruises in 2025. Cordelia Cruises will operate the vessel renamed as Cordelia Sky, focusing on the Indian cruise market with itineraries primarily between Mumbai and Goa.
Under Cordelia Cruises, the ship will also offer short “cruises to nowhere” departing and returning to the same port. The vessel has approximately 77,000 gross tonnage and accommodates around 2,000 passengers
at double occupancy.
Industry Challenges and Operational Risks
Repositioning cruises through the Middle East have become operationally risky due to geopolitical tensions across the Red Sea, Strait of Hormuz, and surrounding areas. Cruise lines face dangers transiting these regions amidst unresolved regional conflicts, especially involving US-Iran relations.
Alternative routings such as traveling around the Cape of Good Hope were considered commercially unviable due to increased time and fuel costs. Norwegian Cruise Line’s cancellation reflects the industry’s emphasis on passenger safety despite financial implications.
Official Statements and Passenger Impact
Norwegian Cruise Line explained the cancellation decision stating, “After careful review, and with the safety and security of our guests and crew
as our guiding priority, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this sailing.” The cruise operator also remarked, “Given the ongoing uncertainty in the region, we no longer have the level of confidence needed to deliver the experience you expect and deserve.”
Passengers affected by the cancellation must seek alternative travel plans. Those who booked flights through Norwegian will have their flights automatically canceled and refunded. Passengers with independently booked flights may claim up to US$300 for eligible airline fees.
