Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled the 19-night farewell voyage of Norwegian Sky originally scheduled to depart from Piraeus, Greece on September 9, 2026. The cruise would have sailed from Athens to Muscat, Oman, including a transit through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea.
Itinerary Changes Prior to Cancellation
The September 2026 sailing had its itinerary revised in July 2026. The voyage was shortened from 21 to 19 nights. Stops in the Arabian Gulf were removed, changing the final destination from Dubai to Muscat. The planned ports called to before cancellation included Rhodes, Alexandria, Port Sokhna, Safaga, Sharm El Sheikh, Jeddah, and Aqaba.
Passenger Compensation and Refunds
Norwegian Cruise
Line notified passengers with bookings on the canceled sailing that they will receive a full refund back to their original payment method. In addition, guests will be awarded a Future Cruise Credit valued at 50% of the current voyage fare. This credit adds to a previously issued 15% credit when the itinerary was revised. The combined credit can be used on any Norwegian Cruise Line sailing departing on or before December 31, 2027.
Flight Booking Policies
Guests who purchased flights through Norwegian will have those airline arrangements automatically canceled and fully refunded by the cruise line. Passengers with independently booked flights may submit
claims for reimbursement of up to US$300 per person to cover eligible airline change or cancellation fees not paid by the airline or travel insurance.
In an official statement dated August 6, 2026, Norwegian Cruise Line said, “After careful review, and with the safety and security of our guests and crew as our guiding priority, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this sailing.” The statement added, “Given the ongoing uncertainty in the region, we no longer have the level of confidence needed to deliver the experience you expect and deserve.”
Regional Security Factors and Industry Response
The cancellation was prompted by ongoing security concerns
linked to the US-Iran conflict, which remains a significant risk factor in the Middle East. Cruise operators have been adjusting or canceling cruises that involve the Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, and Strait of Hormuz due to these safety issues. Norwegian’s cancellation follows earlier itinerary shortening and route modifications made in response to the regional instability.
Norwegian Sky Fleet Departure and Ownership Transfer
Norwegian Sky is set to exit the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet in October 2026 after its sale to Indian operator Cordelia Cruises in 2025. The canceled September sailing had been marketed as the vessel’s farewell cruise before the scheduled fleet departure.
