A powerful nor’easter swept across the US Northeast on September 28, causing widespread flooding and leaving more than 68,000 homes and businesses without power in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania by Saturday evening. New York reported the highest number of outages with more than 31,000 customers affected, while Connecticut and New Jersey each had over 12,000 outages. Long Island and the Rockaways saw more than 13,000 customers affected as strong winds brought down trees and power lines.
Flight tracking service FlightAware recorded 439 flight cancellations and 2,459
delays involving US airports as of Saturday evening. The storm also prompted the postponement of AC/DC’s concert at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, originally scheduled for Friday, now rescheduled for October 2. Voluntary evacuations were issued in some Jersey Shore communities due to flooding in counties including Bergen and Cape May.
The governors of New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency on Friday for areas expected to face the storm’s worst effects, including New York City. Connecticut activated its Emergency Operations Center to coordinate response efforts. Utilities are actively working to restore service; PSEG Long Island
restored power to more than 45,000 customers since Friday morning but still reports over 13,000 affected. Central Hudson Gas & Electric continues to repair outages impacting more than 19,000 customers, especially in Ulster County, with restoration efforts expected to extend into Sunday.
The U.S. National Weather Service forecasts the nor’easter will persist through Monday, bringing further coastal flooding, dangerous rip currents, strong winds, and heavy rainfall across the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Emergency services across the affected states remain engaged in managing power restoration and mitigating flood impacts as transportation infrastructure faces ongoing stress.
