On Monday, Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts, experienced a disruption of 520 flights delayed or canceled as of Monday night. The Federal Aviation Administration enforced a ground delay starting at 7:30 a.m., which will remain active until 2:59 a.m. Tuesday. Inbound flights faced an average delay of 5 hours and 14 minutes due to the ground delay.
Nor’easter Weather and Runway Construction Combine to Restrict Operations
The delays and cancellations were attributed to the combined impact of lingering weather from a weekend nor’easter and ongoing runway and taxiway construction at Logan Airport. Southern New England recorded between 3 and more than 7 inches of rain from the storm.
Additionally, a runway normally used by jets was closed for construction and further affected by strong winds on Monday. According to a Massport spokesperson, air traffic controllers have been operating using alternate runways, but the reduced runway availability has limited the airport’s ability to move aircraft efficiently.
Traveler Impacts and Official Advisories
The FAA’s ground delay orders and limited runway use resulted in substantial disruption for travelers at Logan, with average inbound delays exceeding five hours and numerous cancellations. Massport recommends that passengers verify their flight status directly with their airline before proceeding to the airport. Weather forecasts indicate lighter showers continuing through Monday evening
with the potential for up to an additional inch of rain, while winds are expected to decrease as the nor’easter weakens and moves north.
