Boston Logan International Airport experienced 281 flight cancellations and 442 delays on Monday, September 28, 2026, amid severe weather and runway construction. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enforced a ground delay starting at 7:30 a.m., set to last until 2:59 a.m. Tuesday, with inbound flights delayed by an average of five hours and 14 minutes.
Nor’easter Weather and Construction Limit Operations
The FAA attributed the ground delay to ongoing runway and taxiway construction that reduced available runway capacity. Massport, the airport operator, indicated that the nor’easter’s strong winds prevented use of a typically favored runway, which was closed for construction. This forced air traffic controllers to
rely on other runways, sharply reducing the efficiency of aircraft movements.
Severe Rain and Wind Impact Southern New England
The nor’easter dropped between three and more than seven inches of rain across Southern New England. Meteorological forecasts projected lighter showers continuing Monday evening with up to an additional inch of rainfall. Winds were expected to decrease as the storm system moved north and weakened.

Passengers encountered widespread flight cancellations and delays throughout the day. Massport spokesperson Jennifer Mehigan confirmed via email that the combined effects of weather and construction caused operational inefficiencies and directly contributed to the disruptions.
