Luxury tourism in Puerto Rico grew significantly between 2025 and 2026, with occupancy in the luxury and upper-upscale hotel segment rising 14% and visitors booking 262,779 hotel nights in 2025, an 18% increase. This surge has attracted major hotel brands to expand on the island, including the $30 million renovation and reopening of Hyatt Centric San Juan Isla Verde in December 2025, and Hilton’s new developments in San Juan, Ponce, and Dorado.
Nobu Announces 50-Room Luxury Hotel Project in San Juan
Nobu Hospitality revealed plans to build a 50-room luxury hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, scheduled to open by 2028. The project is a joint venture with real
estate firm KTT and will incorporate a Nobu signature restaurant and bar at street level along with a rooftop bar and lounge. The dining venues will feature Nobu’s renowned dishes such as black miso cod and the lychee martini cocktail.
The hotel’s design will emphasize Puerto Rican cultural elements, offering guests an experience reflective of the island’s character, according to Nobu Hospitality.
Nobu Brand Growth and Expansion
Founded in the 1990s by celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro, and film producer Meir Teper, Nobu Hospitality opened its first hotel in Las Vegas in 2013. As of 2026, Nobu operates 20 hotels globally, with
28 more in development over the next decade. Upcoming properties include locations in Barbuda, New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood, and Rutland in the English countryside, where the brand’s first countryside resort will span 185 acres.
CEO Highlights Puerto Rico as a Strategic Destination
Trevor Horwell, Chief Executive of Nobu Hospitality, described Puerto Rico as “one of the Caribbean’s most compelling destinations, celebrated for its rich history, vibrant culture, and exceptional hospitality.” He added that the San Juan hotel would become part of a regionally significant neighborhood, introducing Nobu’s distinctive hospitality to the Caribbean’s luxury market.
Horwell said the development will cater to discerning travelers drawn to the island’s
unique offerings.
