Marriott International opened its first hotel in Laos, La Résidence Phou Vao, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Luang Prabang, on November 4, 2026. This launch marks Marriott’s 800th property in the Asia-Pacific region excluding China.

La Résidence Phou Vao Location and Heritage

La Résidence Phou Vao is a 36-suite luxury retreat situated on Phou Vao hill, approximately two kilometres from Luang Prabang’s historic centre. The resort occupies three acres within the UNESCO World Heritage zone, overlooking the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers as well as nearby temples and mountain landscapes. It provides easy access to cultural landmarks including the Royal Palace Museum,

Wat Xieng Thong, and Mount Phou Si.

Accommodation and Design Features

The 36 suites feature Lao craftsmanship and French design influences, with handwoven textiles, rosewood details, and spacious bathrooms with terrazzo bathtubs. Suites offer views of gardens, mountains, or temples; some include private terraces or separate living rooms.

Amenities and Dining

The resort offers a 13-metre cliff-edge infinity pool with panoramic views. The Mekong Spa provides treatments inspired by Lao healing traditions, along with a sauna and relaxation facilities. Dining is available at La Brasserie de la Résidence, serving French cuisine combined with local Lao ingredients and culinary influences.

Guest Experiences, Access, and Transport

Cultural experiences such as traditional blessing ceremonies and

local culinary activities are arranged to connect guests with Luang Prabang’s heritage. The hotel is accessible through Marriott’s global reservation system and participates in the Marriott Bonvoy program, subject to applicable rules. It is located about four kilometres from Luang Prabang International Airport and 11 kilometres from the China–Laos railway station.

Marriott’s Expansion in Southeast Asia

Joining Marriott’s portfolio involved interior renovations, new dining concepts, and updated guest experiences at La Résidence Phou Vao. This addition expands The Luxury Collection brand’s presence in Southeast Asia and introduces an internationally branded luxury accommodation option in northern Laos.

Cultural Context of Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is a major cultural destination in Laos,

known for its Buddhist temples, traditional architecture, and riverside landscapes. Visitors can explore historic sites, enjoy excursions on the Mekong River, and visit nearby attractions such as Kuang Si Waterfalls and Pak Ou Caves.
