The 16th Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) took place from October 6 to 8, 2026, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, attracting more than 10,000 delegates from 40 countries. This attendance represents a roughly 30% increase from the 7,691 delegates recorded at MKTE 2025, making it the largest turnout since the expo’s inception. The event featured over 400 exhibitors and more than 250 quality-vetted international buyers, reinforcing its standing as East Africa’s leading travel trade expo.
Expo Theme Focuses on Digital Innovation and Market Intelligence
Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) CEO June Chepkemei emphasized that every aspect of MKTE 2026 was guided by market intelligence and consumer demand data. “Every element
of this year’s MKTE programme, from the buyer selection to the seminar agenda, is informed by data and consumer demand intelligence,” she said. The expo was held under the theme “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism,” aligning with the global focus of World Tourism Day 2026. The event explored how AI, big data, immersive technologies, digital payments, and smart destination tools can enhance the visitor experience and destination competitiveness.
MICE Sector Gains Prominence at MKTE 2026
MKTE 2026 devoted significant attention to Kenya’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, an increasingly vital block of the tourism industry. The Kenya MICE Club facilitated
collaboration between government and private stakeholders to present Kenya as a competitive business events destination. Kenya MICE Association Chair Duncan Muriuki said, “MICE is the next frontier for growing tourism revenue. Our focus is not just on increasing visitor numbers, but on attracting high-value business events that deliver greater economic impact.” The club is developing competitive bidding packages that include destination incentives and strong value propositions, leveraging Kenya’s modern venues and “bleisure” attractions in Nairobi and Mombasa.
Government Reforms Enhance Visa Access and Air Connectivity
Tour Operators Society of Kenya Chair Raymond Cheruiyot commended government reforms aimed at facilitating visa access and expanding air connectivity, calling them foundational
for tourism expansion. “The Government’s efforts to improve visa access and expand air connectivity have created a strong foundation for tourism growth,” Cheruiyot said. These investments strengthen Kenya’s attractiveness to international travelers and support the country’s goal of reaching five million visitors by the end of 2027.
MKTE as a Platform for Partnerships and Tourism Growth
MKTE functioned as a vital platform for marketing, partnerships, seminars, and business-to-business meetings designed to enhance trade opportunities. It provided a setting where Kenya Tourism Board aligns domestic and international marketing campaigns with traveler interests to convert visitor interest into arrivals. Chepkemei stated, “We know what the interests of our visitors are and
what it takes to convert interest into arrivals. MKTE is the platform where we bring those insights to life for our partners.” The expo supports Kenya’s public-private partnership model, which remains central to the country’s efforts to strengthen its global tourism market position.
