The 16th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) took place from October 6 to October 8, 2026, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, hosting over 10,000 delegates from 40 countries. This count represents approximately 30% growth from 7,691 delegates in 2025. The expo featured more than 400 exhibitors alongside over 250 vetted international buyers, reaffirming MKTE as the leading travel trade event in East Africa.
Expo Focus on Digital Innovation and AI
MKTE 2026 operated under the theme “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism,” aligning with World Tourism Day 2026. The event concentrated on advancements such as AI, big data analytics, immersive
technologies, digital payments, and smart destination management tools to enhance tourism competitiveness and visitor experience across the continent.
Kenya’s Tourism Targets and Government Reforms
Kenya aims to attract five million international visitors by the end of 2027. The government has introduced reforms to ease visa access and expand air connectivity, particularly improving links to Nairobi and Mombasa. These initiatives form part of a public-private partnership model central to accelerating Kenya’s tourism growth. The Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei emphasized that MKTE programming is informed by market intelligence and consumer demand to effectively convert visitor interest into arrivals.
MICE Sector Emphasis and Stakeholder Collaboration
The Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector
received special focus at MKTE 2026. The Kenya MICE Club facilitated collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders to promote Kenya as a competitive destination for international business events. Kenya MICE Association Chair Duncan Muriuki highlighted the development of competitive bidding packages inclusive of destination incentives. He stated, “MICE is the next frontier for growing tourism revenue. Our focus is not just on increasing visitor numbers, but on attracting high-value business events that deliver greater economic impact.” The country’s modern facilities and bleisure offerings in Nairobi and Mombasa support this strategy.
Official Statements from Industry Leaders
Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei noted, “Every element
of this year’s MKTE programme, from the buyer selection to the seminar agenda, is informed by data and consumer demand intelligence.” She added, “We know what the interests of our visitors are and what it takes to convert interest into arrivals. Our marketing campaigns both domestic and international are built on that evidence, and MKTE is the platform where we bring those insights to life for our partners.” Raymond Cheruiyot, Chair of the Tour Operators Society of Kenya (TOSK), stated that government efforts on visa facilitation and air connectivity have created a strong foundation for tourism growth. He described MKTE
as a vital platform to showcase Kenya’s tourism products and build partnerships.
Expo Activities and Traveler Impact
The expo hosted seminars, business-to-business meetings, and familiarisation trips designed to strengthen partnerships and generate trade opportunities. MKTE facilitated examination of technology and smart management tools aimed at improving Kenya’s competitiveness as a tourism destination while ensuring inclusive growth. Additionally, the focus on the MICE sector encourages business travelers to extend visits by combining business with leisure in Nairobi and Mombasa.
MKTE’s Role in Kenya’s Regional Tourism Strategy
MKTE remains East Africa’s premier travel trade event, reflecting increasing confidence in Kenya’s tourism sector. The event plays a central role in promoting Kenya’s tourism products and
generating strategic partnerships. Government reforms, including easing visa access and expanding air connectivity, support Kenya’s campaign to boost arrivals and position itself strongly in the global tourism market.
