More than 10,000 delegates from 40 countries are expected to attend the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) 2026, scheduled at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi from October 6 to October 8. This projection represents a 30% increase over the 7,691 delegates who attended MKTE 2025, making it the largest gathering since the event’s inception.

Kenya Targets 5 Million Visitors by 2027 Through Public-Private Partnerships

Kenya is intensifying efforts to attract five million international visitors by the end of 2027. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), alongside the Tour Operators Society of Kenya (TOSK) and the Kenya MICE Association, emphasize the role of public-private partnerships in achieving this target. The event brings together

over 400 exhibitors and more than 250 international buyers who undergo quality vetting to ensure productive trade engagements, reinforcing MKTE’s status as East Africa’s premier travel trade event.

Expo Theme Focuses on Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence

MKTE 2026’s theme, “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism,” aligns with the global focus of World Tourism Day 2026. The event will highlight AI, big data, immersive technologies, digital payment systems, and smart destination tools as key drivers to enhance visitor experiences and destination competitiveness across Africa.

MICE Sector Gains Emphasis to Attract High-Value Business Events

The expo will emphasize Kenya’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) segment, an increasingly vital pillar of the country’s tourism strategy.

The Kenya MICE Club, combining government and private sector stakeholders, is crafting competitive bidding packages aimed at positioning Kenya as a leading destination for international business events. Duncan Muriuki, Chair of the Kenya MICE Association, emphasized attracting high-value events to boost tourism revenue beyond mere visitor numbers.

Officials Highlight Strategic Growth and Data-Driven Marketing

Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei stated, “Every element of this year’s MKTE programme, from the buyer selection to the seminar agenda, is informed by data and consumer demand intelligence.” She added that marketing campaigns, domestically and internationally, are evidence-based to convert interest into actual arrivals. Chairman of TOSK Raymond Cheruiyot credited government

reforms easing visa access and expanding air connectivity for establishing a strong foundation for tourism growth.

Government Reforms and Improved Connectivity Support Growth

The Kenyan government’s initiatives to simplify visa access and grow air connectivity have increased the country’s appeal to international travelers. TOSK Chair Raymond Cheruiyot identified these reforms as critical strengths underpinning Kenya’s expanding tourism sector and supporting the ambitious visitor growth goals.

Implications for Travelers and Tourism Sector Innovation

Growth in the MICE sector positions Kenya to attract valuable business events, encouraging longer stays through “bleisure” offerings in Nairobi and Mombasa. MKTE 2026 aims to improve visitor experiences by promoting digital innovations such as AI and immersive technologies. These advances seek

to solidify Kenya’s competitiveness as a tourism destination in East Africa.
