The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) issued a ground stop advisory for LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York on Monday, July 27, 2026. This directive halted all flights destined for LaGuardia at their departure points until the stop was lifted. Delta Air Lines reported the highest number of flight cancellations at LaGuardia on that day.
Traffic Management Program Causes Delays at JFK
At John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), arriving flights were delayed due to a Traffic Management Program enacted by the FAA. This program aimed to manage the flow of inbound traffic amid staffing shortages at the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center. According to the
FAA, some flights faced average arrival delays of 2 hours and 29 minutes.
Earlier in July, New York area airports experienced widespread disruptions where more than 500 flights were canceled and approximately 4,000 delayed. These issues stemmed from a combination of adverse weather conditions and staffing constraints within FAA air traffic control facilities.
Broader Impact on New York Area Airports and FAA Operations
The New York Air Route Traffic Control Center, which oversees flights to JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport, continues to face operational challenges. Weather and staffing shortages have collectively slowed arrivals at these major airports, affecting air traffic control capabilities.
The FAA confirmed,
“Due to STAFFING / STAFFING, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving at John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 2 hours and 29 minutes.”
