Delta Air Lines experienced the highest number of flight cancellations out of LaGuardia as of Monday morning. The ground stop halted all flights departing for LaGuardia, requiring them to remain at their origin until the restriction was lifted.
Traffic Management Program and Delays at JFK Airport
John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is operating under a Traffic Management Program due to staffing shortages in air traffic control. This has caused arriving flights to be delayed by an average of 2 hours and 29 minutes. The FAA stated, “Due to STAFFING
/ STAFFING, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving at John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 2 hours and 29 minutes.”
Recent Staffing and Weather Challenges Affecting New York Airports
Earlier in July, more than 500 flights were canceled and 4,000 delayed across the New York area, including LaGuardia and JFK airports, due to a combination of weather conditions and air traffic control staffing constraints. The FAA has been slowing flights into JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport to manage these challenges.
