Greece ranked third in Europe for en route flight delays during the week of July 27 to August 2, 2026, accounting for 11% of total air traffic management delays across the European network, according to Eurocontrol data reported by The Greek Herald.
Delay Shares by Country and Air Traffic Control Centers
France recorded the highest share of flight delays at 40%, followed by Spain at 14%. Greece’s Athens Area Control Center was responsible for 7% of Europe’s total delay time, while the Macedonia Control Center accounted for an additional 4%.
Causes of Flight Delays Across Europe and Greece
Capacity constraints and staffing shortages contributed to 64% of en route flight delays across Europe during the same week.
In Greece, these factors—limited airspace capacity and air traffic control staffing shortfalls—intensified delay figures amid rising demand. Despite these challenges, overall European en route delays were 28% lower than the corresponding week in 2025 but rose 11% compared to the prior week.
Air Traffic Volume and Market Position
Greece ranked seventh among Europe’s ten busiest aviation markets, managing an average of 2,842 daily arrivals and departures. This represented a 5% increase in traffic volume compared to one year earlier, and a 1% rise from the previous week. Spain led Europe with 6,541 daily flights, followed by the UK, Germany, Italy, France, and Turkey. Greece’s annual growth
rate was among the strongest in these top markets, surpassed only by Italy, Poland, and Spain.
Tourism-driven demand continues to push Greek airspace to its limits, straining air traffic control capacity and staffing levels and contributing significantly to Europe’s overall flight delays during this period.
