Germany and Switzerland jointly issued a fresh travel advisory in July 2026 addressing intensified airport queues, flight delays, and biometric checks affecting major Central European hubs during the summer travel season.

Operational Causes Behind Flight Disruptions

Flight schedules in Central Europe are impacted by severe thunderstorms, congested European airspace, air traffic control restrictions, and longer routes due to conflict-affected zones. These factors contribute to operational delays at hubs such as Frankfurt Airport, Munich Airport, and Zurich Airport, which quickly cascade throughout the European aviation network affecting connecting flights and baggage transfers.

Airports, Airlines, and Border Control Technologies Involved

Lufthansa and SWISS operate near maximum capacity at Frankfurt, Munich, and Zurich airports. Passengers

encounter automated biometric border controls, including facial recognition and electronic passport verification, alongside traditional manual passport checks. During peak travel, travellers may be redirected between automated biometric gates and manual passport inspection. Airport operations teams adjust aircraft parking positions, boarding gates, and departure slots during busy periods to maintain safety and reduce disruption.

Impact on Passengers and Recommended Preparations

Travellers should expect longer wait times at check-in, security screening, and immigration processing due to increased passenger volumes and biometric screenings. Non-European Union travellers may experience longer immigration procedures. Airlines urge passengers to download their official mobile apps to receive real-time updates on gate changes, boarding times,

and delays, as well as to monitor airport displays. Passengers making international transfers or traveling on separate tickets should allow additional connection time. Booking through a single airline or alliance provides greater protection against operational changes. Travellers are advised to ensure passports are valid, visas completed, and boarding documents ready before arrival.

Summer 2026 Travel Season and Tourism Infrastructure Status

Summer is Europe’s busiest travel season, with 2026 adding challenges from severe weather and congested airspace. Despite operational difficulties at airports, tourism infrastructure such as rail services, hotels, museums, mountain resorts, and cultural attractions in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Zurich, Geneva, and Lucerne remain fully operational and welcoming tourists.
