First Liquid Hydrogen Cruise Ship Uses Container Fuel Delivery at Ports

The first cruise ship designed to operate with liquid hydrogen fuel was floated out at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard on March 19, 2026. The vessel measures 239 meters in length and has a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300. It contains 499 staterooms to accommodate up to 998 guests. Its propulsion incorporates six-megawatt proton exchange membrane fuel cells, built by Fincantieri subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori. These fuel cells provide about one-third of the ship’s propulsion power, with the remainder supplied by conventional engines.

Containerized Liquid Hydrogen Delivery Due to Port Limitations

The ship will receive its liquid hydrogen fuel in containers at port calls, as no cruise port worldwide currently

has the infrastructure to directly pump liquid hydrogen. This novel approach bypasses the need for dockside liquid hydrogen bunkering facilities. The shipbuilder Fincantieri described the containerized delivery system as a first-of-its-kind solution addressing this infrastructure gap. However, this limits the ship’s zero-emission cruising range to the capacity of onboard stored hydrogen and the frequency of container refilling.

Viking Leadership Comments and Emissions Capability

On a May 14, 2026 earnings call, Viking chairman Torstein Hagen disclosed that the fuel cells cover about one-third of the ship’s propulsion, while the rest depends on conventional engines. He described hydrogen fuel as “expensive and not easy to get hold of.”

According to Viking’s float-out announcement, the propulsion system is “based partially on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells,” and the ship is “capable of operating with zero emissions” during parts of its itinerary rather than continuously. Viking president and CEO Leah Talactac stated that every ship in Viking’s ocean fleet is fitted with closed-loop scrubbers, enabling operation on heavy fuel oil where necessary.

Regulatory Context and Industry Trends

Norwegian zero-emission requirements apply to passenger ships under 10,000 gross tons starting January 1, 2026, but only apply to larger ships like this one from January 1, 2032. The ship’s 2026 float-out precedes these requirements by six years.

The International Maritime Organization’s Net-Zero Framework, which would price emissions for ships above 5,000 GT, failed to be adopted in October 2025 and again in spring 2026, with a resumed session scheduled for December 4, 2026.

MSC Cruises has incorporated fuel cell technology with its World Europa operating a 150-kilowatt fuel cell demonstrator powered by LNG since 2022. MSC’s Explora V and VI, equipped with liquid hydrogen containment and six-megawatt fuel cells for hotel loads, are slated for delivery in 2027 and 2028. Viking’s next planned hydrogen-powered ship, Astrea, is expected in 2027. Additionally, Fincantieri’s subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori achieved

a first firing of a single-cylinder hydrogen internal combustion engine on July 22, 2026, and an industrial gas turbine approved by RINA for 100% hydrogen operation was showcased at Posidonia in June 2026.

Operational Limitations and Hydrogen Supply Uncertainties

The ship’s ability to cruise emission-free depends on the amount of liquid hydrogen it can carry in containers and how frequently it can replenish fuel during port calls. No cruise port currently supports liquid hydrogen bunkering infrastructure for direct refueling. Viking has not publicly confirmed any hydrogen supplier nor the method of hydrogen production as of the most recent reports. Most hydrogen produced industrially originates from steam

methane reforming, which emits CO2 upstream, while green hydrogen produced through renewable energy electrolysis is costly and limited in volume.
