The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented weather-related ground stops at Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) and several other major U.S. airports from Sunday, August 23, through Tuesday, August 25, 2026, due to thunderstorms in the Washington, D.C. area. These ground stops are designed to halt flights to manage safety during adverse weather conditions.

Ronald Reagan Airport experienced ground stops on consecutive days, Sunday and Monday, resulting in the highest flight cancellations in the U.S. on Monday. DCA recorded 25 canceled departures and 21 canceled arrivals that day. American Airlines had 30 delayed flights at DCA on Monday, while PSA Airlines

reported 33 canceled flights and 129 delays across its routes at the airport.

Passenger experiences highlighted the disruptions. Traveler Travis Chapman was on American Airlines flight AA 5128 from Tulsa to DCA, which faced multiple delays totaling over six hours before cancellation. Another passenger, AJ, reported a three-hour delayed flight from Westchester County Airport (HPN) to DCA followed by a 30-minute wait at the arrival gate and missed connecting flights.

Travis Chapman said, “Very frustrated that @AmericanAir keeps a running delay for flight 5128. It seems destined for cancellation but they are going to force me and my family to

stay at the airport for more than 6 hours before they cancel.” AJ added, “@AmericanAir This is absolutely unacceptable! The HPN flight to DCA was delayed over 3 hours. We arrive at DCA and there is a plane at our scheduled gate boarding. We are now waiting another 30 minutes and I have another missed flight.” American Airlines responded, “We’re sorry to hear about the delays and the additional wait after arrival. We understand how frustrating it is to experience multiple disruptions and miss a connecting flight as a result. Our DM doors are always open to you should you

need us, and we’re happy to help where we can on point you in the right direction.”

By Tuesday morning, August 25, disruptions eased with thunderstorms subsiding. American Airlines reported only one canceled flight and 19 delayed flights at DCA that morning, while cancellations remained chiefly with PSA Airlines flights. The ongoing weather-related ground stops continued to impact multiple Northeast hubs and major U.S. airports.
