The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued weather-related ground stops on August 25, 2026, at several major U.S. airports including Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA), due to thunderstorms in the Washington, D.C. area. The stoppages at DCA occurred for the second consecutive day, making it the airport with the highest number of flight cancellations nationwide that day.
Flight Disruptions and Cancellations at DCA
At Ronald Reagan National Airport, the FAA’s ground stops led to 25 canceled departures and 21 canceled arrivals. American Airlines reported 30 flight delays at the airport, while PSA Airlines faced more severe disruptions with 33 canceled flights and delays on nearly half of
its routes from the hub, totaling 129 delays. The combination of cancellations and delays reflected the significant impact on the airport’s operations amid the persistent thunderstorms.
Passenger Experiences During the Ground Stops
Passengers at DCA endured hours-long delays and several flight cancellations stemming from the ground stops. American Airlines flight 5128, scheduled to depart from Tulsa to DCA at 4:17 p.m., was delayed multiple times before ultimately being canceled as the crew reached their maximum duty time. Passengers Travis Chapman and AJ publicly shared their frustration over the extended waits and missed connections. AJ’s flight from Westchester County Airport (HPN) to DCA was delayed more than
three hours, followed by additional gate delays upon arrival, causing a missed connecting flight.
Airline Response and Passenger Assistance
American Airlines acknowledged the delays and cancellations caused by the weather-related ground stops, expressing regret for the additional wait times and missed connections faced by passengers. The airline emphasized that customer service support remained available via direct messaging to assist travelers affected by the disruptions at the airport.
Ongoing and Expected Travel Impacts
Even after the thunderstorms subsided, flight cancellations and delays at DCA persisted into the following day. On the morning of August 26, American Airlines reported one canceled flight and 19 delays. PSA Airlines continued to register most of
the cancellations and delays at the airport. However, with favorable weather conditions expected on the day following the consecutive ground stops, disruptions at DCA were predicted to decrease as operations began to normalize.
