Kennedy airports, following earlier operational slowdowns caused by staffing shortages and severe weather. Flights into the three major New York City-area airports were delayed and halted temporarily on July 27, 2026, as the FAA managed congestion at the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center.
Flight Disruptions Across New York Airports
FlightAware data showed approximately 500 inbound flights delayed across Newark Airport (EWR), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and JFK Airport as of 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday. Additionally, around 80 incoming flights were canceled at these hubs. The disruptions extended to
departing flights as well, with over 300 departures delayed from the New York City area during the same period.
FAA Cites Staffing and Weather for Slowdown
An FAA spokesperson confirmed the ground stops were implemented due to a combination of staffing shortages at the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center and severe weather conditions affecting operations. The FAA did not specify reasons for the staffing gaps. The agency confirmed that the ground stops were lifted on Monday, allowing flight operations to resume at Newark, LaGuardia, and JFK.
Earlier in the day, flights arriving at the three airports were delayed by over an hour, with delays expected
to persist into late Monday night. Ground stops affected both inbound and outbound flights, causing numerous cancellations and flight delays across these major New York hubs.
