The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) activated ground stops at nine major airports across the Northeastern United States on August 6, 2026, due to forecasts of severe thunderstorms and potential damaging wind gusts impacting New York and New Jersey.
Flight Cancellations Concentrated at LaGuardia and Newark Airports
LaGuardia Airport recorded the highest number of cancellations among U.S. airports on August 6 and into the morning of August 7, with 37 departure cancellations and 27 arrival cancellations reported on Wednesday, increasing to 43 cancellations by Thursday morning. Newark Liberty International Airport followed with 27 cancellations during the same timeframe.
Delta Air Lines’ Response to Travel Disruptions
Delta Air Lines issued travel warnings and flexible rebooking policies for
flights across nine Northeast hubs facing FAA ground stops on August 6 and 7, 2026. The airline announced a waiver of change fees for travel rebooked on or before August 10, 2026, as long as the same cabin of service and destination are maintained. Delta’s official communication states that a fare difference may apply if the rebooking does not retain the original booking class.
Customer Impact: Delays and Staffing Issues at LaGuardia
Passengers at LaGuardia experienced significant delays on August 6, with some flights delayed nearly three hours due to air traffic control restrictions and staffing shortages. Delta flight DL2396 was specifically delayed because of insufficient pilot staffing,
unable to secure a second pilot required for operation. Customers voiced frustrations on social media platforms, reporting flight delays exceeding two hours and citing Delta’s inability to assign pilots on time.
Broader Operational Challenges and Continuing Disruptions
Severe weather and air traffic control measures at highly congested Northeast hubs including LaGuardia, Newark, and Boston airport continue to strain airline operations. JetBlue, among other major carriers, has also faced disruptions due to high airport capacity coinciding with weather-related delays. FAA ground stops and air traffic restrictions are expected to persist through August 6 and 7, 2026, maintaining pressure on airlines operating in the region.
