The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented ground stops at nine major airports across the U.S. Northeast on August 18, 2026, as thunderstorms with potential damaging wind gusts moved into New York and New Jersey. The FAA imposed these stops as precautionary measures to manage air traffic amid severe weather conditions forecasted for the afternoon and evening.
Flight Cancellations at LaGuardia and Newark
Flight cancellations began on August 17, 2026, primarily affecting New York area airports. LaGuardia Airport (LGA) recorded the highest cancellations among U.S. airports with 37 departures and 27 arrivals canceled that day. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) posted the second-highest total with 27 canceled
flights on August 17. Early on August 18, cancellations at LaGuardia increased to 43 and were expected to rise as thunderstorms advanced into the region.
Delta Air Lines Issues Warnings and Rebooking Policies
Delta Air Lines issued public warnings to passengers traveling through nine Northeast U.S. hubs, including its major New York area airports, about expected weather disruptions. Delta announced it would waive change fees and fare differences for rebooked travel on or before August 10, 2026, provided the new travel remains in the same cabin and destination as originally booked. The airline’s rebooking policy covers flights for August 6 and August 7, 2026, as stated by Delta,
despite these dates preceding current disruptions.
Delta customers have experienced significant delays attributed to air traffic control issues and staffing shortages. Passenger Mark Haubry reported a delay of over two hours on a flight from Indianapolis (IND) to LaGuardia on August 17, citing FAA air traffic problems. Additionally, flight DL2396 from LaGuardia to Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) was delayed due to the availability of only one pilot, as noted by passenger Rudi Bester.
Passenger Reports Describe Operational Challenges
Delta customers at LaGuardia faced multi-hour delays even before the thunderstorms arrived on August 18. Mark Haubry tweeted about almost three hours of delay caused by
air traffic control difficulties. Rudi Bester posted about the DL2396 flight delay stemming from a pilot staffing shortage. Delta confirmed their policy of waiving fare differences for rebookings made by August 10, 2026, in the same booking class but warned that fare differences might apply if the original booking class is not maintained.
Ongoing Disruption Expected at Northeast Airports
With the continuing arrival of thunderstorms expected across New York and New Jersey on August 18, FAA ground stops remain in effect at nine major Northeast airports. Delta and JetBlue are anticipated to be among the most impacted carriers due to their high-capacity operations in New York
and Boston hubs. Travelers should expect further delays and cancellations throughout the day as weather conditions affect air traffic management.
