The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) maintained ground stops at multiple major U.S. airports, including Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Washington D.C., at the beginning of the week. DCA experienced two ground stops on Sunday and Monday, both triggered by thunderstorms in the area, making it the airport with the highest number of canceled flights nationwide for a second consecutive day.
On Monday, Ronald Reagan Airport recorded 25 canceled departures and 21 canceled arrivals. American Airlines, which operates a significant volume of flights from DCA, reported 30 delays on Monday. PSA Airlines, which operates numerous regional routes at DCA, accounted
for the majority of cancellations with 33 flights canceled. PSA also experienced delays on nearly half of its routes at the airport, totaling 129 delays.
Passenger Experiences with Repeated Delays and Cancellations
Passengers flying with American Airlines at Ronald Reagan reported multiple delays to the same flights before eventual cancellations. Travis Chapman, a traveler on American Airlines flight 5128 from Tulsa to DCA originally scheduled for 4:17 p.m. on Monday, faced a series of gate delays that stretched for hours before the flight was canceled because the crew exceeded allowable duty time.
Another passenger, identified as AJ, experienced a more than three-hour delay on an American Airlines
flight from Westchester County Airport (HPN) to DCA. Upon arrival, AJ encountered an additional 30-minute wait at the gate, resulting in a missed connecting flight. These disruptions reflected the broader delay patterns caused by the FAA ground stops and associated weather conditions.
American Airlines Response and Continuing Disruptions
American Airlines issued apologies addressing the delays and cancellations affecting passengers at Ronald Reagan National Airport. The airline stated that its customer service channels remained open to assist those impacted and provide direction for rescheduling or other needs. On Tuesday morning, disruptions at DCA lessened with American Airlines reporting just one canceled flight and 19 delays.
However, cancellations
persisted at DCA on Tuesday, particularly involving PSA Airlines. The expectation was for disruption numbers to grow through the day amid high travel demand nationwide.
Weather-Related FAA Actions and Outlook
The FAA imposed ground stops at several major airports over Sunday and Monday due to thunderstorms and severe weather near Ronald Reagan Airport. The dual ground stops at DCA halted all flights temporarily and contributed to cascading scheduling conflicts leading to long delays and crew timing out, which caused many cancellations. On Tuesday, with weather conditions improving and no rain forecast, the volume of disruptions at DCA diminished, although some cancellations continued.
