DCA serves as a key hub for American Airlines and also supports operations for United Airlines.
Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) faced similar issues with 51
flight cancellations amid ground stops caused by a combination of severe weather and a scheduled air show. Additionally, ORD recorded more than 1,600 flight delays, affecting over half of the flights operated out of the airport including major carriers American Airlines and United Airlines.
Ongoing Cancellations Extend Into Monday
The disruption extended into Monday morning, August 24, with DCA carrying over 18 cancelled flights and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) reporting 20 flight cancellations. PSA Airlines, a significant carrier operating at DCA, led cancellations among U.S. carriers on both Sunday and Monday. JetBlue saw increased cancellations at JFK, including the cancellation of Flight #1880
from Fort Lauderdale to DCA on Sunday.
Traveler Experiences Amid Disruptions
Passengers faced extensive delays and cancellations nationwide. Scott Herman, traveling from Nashville International Airport (BNA) to DCA, reported his flight was delayed on the taxiway for 30 minutes following earlier boarding delays. An anonymous JetBlue passenger criticized the airline after Flight #1880 was canceled at JFK, citing insufficient communication and minimal compensation.
Daniel Baldwin, a passenger on American Airlines, recounted a nine-hour layover at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) due to delays en route to Jackson, Wyoming. His return itinerary also experienced a two-hour delay leaving Jackson and a further 30-minute delay
caused by maintenance, leading to an overnight stay in a Dallas hotel.

American Airlines and United Airlines were heavily affected by ground stops and delays at their major hubs of DCA and ORD. Hawaiian Airlines also experienced increased cancellations attributed to ongoing hurricane threats impacting flights in the region.
