The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that a ground stop at Newark Airport (EWR) remains in effect through 10:15 p.m. local time on August 8, 2026. The restriction is in place as a precautionary measure due to the severe storm activity over the area.
Flight Cancellations and Delays Across Tri-State Airports
FlightAware data showed that as of 9:45 p.m., 930 flights had been canceled and over 1,000 delayed at the tri-state region’s major airports, including Newark, Kennedy (JFK), and LaGuardia
(LGA). The cancellations and delays mark a significant disruption continuing for the second day in a row due to ongoing storms.
While the FAA lifted ground stops earlier at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, delays persist at those locations despite improvements in weather conditions.
In addition to airport interruptions, NJ Transit suspended rail services in affected areas to address safety concerns caused by the severe thunderstorms.
The severe weather has disrupted flight and rail operations concurrently, leading to substantial travel delays and cancellations across New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut on August 8, 2026.
