The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has imposed a ground stop at Newark Airport extending through 10:15 p.m. on August 9, 2026, due to severe thunderstorms affecting the tri-state region.
Flight disruptions across Newark, Kennedy, and LaGuardia airports have been substantial, with 930 flights canceled and over 1,000 flights delayed as of 9:45 p.m. on the same day.
Ground stops at Kennedy and LaGuardia Airports have been lifted, but residual delays continue across the airports in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area.
Storms have also caused rail service suspensions on New Jersey transit rail lines operated by NJ Transit, further disrupting transportation
in the region.
This is the second consecutive day that severe thunderstorms have caused significant travel disruptions at the tri-state region’s major airports and rail networks.
