The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) issued a ground stop advisory at LaGuardia Airport on Monday, July 27, 2026, halting departures to that airport until further notice. At the same time, arrivals at John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) faced delays averaging 2 hours and 29 minutes, attributed to a staffing shortage that triggered a Traffic Management Program.
“Due to STAFFING / STAFFING, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving at John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 2 hours and 29 minutes,”
the FAA stated. A ground stop means flights heading to LaGuardia are held at their points of origin until the restriction is lifted.
Expanded Airport Impact and Airline Disruptions
The FAA’s traffic management measures also affected Newark Liberty International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport alongside JFK and LaGuardia. Delta Air Lines recorded the highest number of flight cancellations at LaGuardia on July 27. Staffing shortages at the air traffic control center responsible for these four airports heavily contributed to the operational slowdowns.
These actions follow earlier disruptions in July 2026 when over 500 flights were canceled and approximately 4,000 delayed across the New York area, primarily
due to a combination of weather difficulties and air traffic control staffing constraints. The combination of adverse weather and limited air traffic personnel continues to slow arrivals and departures at key airports in the region.
